Announcing the nominees for the 2017 Manly Wade Wellman Award

The North Carolina Speculative Fiction Foundation is proud to announce the nominees for the 2017 Manly Wade Wellman Award for North Carolina Science Fiction and Fantasy. These nominees are the result of voter selection from the final eligibility list through the nominations process, presented in alphabetical order by primary author last name:

  • Death’s Bright Day by David Drake (Baen Books)
  • Steeplejack by A.J. Hartley (Tor Books)
  • Pawn’s Gambit by Darin Kennedy (Falstaff Books)
  • Shadow and Flame by Gail Z. Martin (Orbit Books)
  • War Pigs by Jay Requard (Falstaff Books)
The nominees were announced at ConCarolinas in Charlotte, NC on Friday, June 2. Additionally, final voting is now open and continues through Monday, July 3, 2017 at 11:59:59 PM Eastern Time. The winner(s) will be announced at ConGregate on Saturday, July 15.

Monday, March 6, 2017, Durham, NC: The North Carolina Speculative Fiction Foundation is proud to announce that nominations for the 2017 Manly Wade Wellman Award for North Carolina Science Fiction and Fantasy are now open, using an updated final eligibility list which includes 118 titles.

The Manly Wade Wellman Award was founded to recognize outstanding achievement in science fiction and fantasy novels written by North Carolina authors. The 2017 award, voted on by the combined membership of North Carolina science fiction and fantasy conventions (illogiCon, StellarConConCarolinasConTemporal, and ConGregate), covers novels published in 2016. Nominations will remain open until Monday, May 22, followed by a final voting round to begin in June after the finalists are announced at ConCarolinas. The award will be presented at ConGregate in July.

The Manly Wade Wellman Award was founded in 2013 to recognize outstanding achievement in science fiction and fantasy novels written by North Carolina authors. The 2017 award, voted on by the combined membership of North Carolina science fiction and fantasy conventions (illogiCon, StellarconConCarolinas, ConTemporal, and ConGregate), covers novels published in 2016. Announcing the winner of the 2016 Manly Wade Wellman Award

Monday, July 18, 2016, Durham, NC:

The North Carolina Speculative Fiction Foundation is proud to announce the winner of the 2016 Manly Wade Wellman Award for North Carolina Science Fiction and Fantasy,  after the result of voter selection from the nominees, in turn the result of voter selection from an eligibility list of over 100 novels. The award was presented on July 16, 2016, to Charlotte author John G. Hartness for Raising Hell.

In his acceptance speech, Hartness expressed both his gratitude to those who voted, as well as his honor at being included among his fellow nominees this year.

Announcing the winner of the 2015 Manly Wade Wellman Award

The North Carolina Speculative Fiction Foundation is proud to announce the winner of the 2015 Manly Wade Wellman Award for North Carolina Science Fiction and Fantasy,  after the result of voter selection from the nominees, in turn the result of voter selection from an eligibility list of over 80 novels. The award was presented on July 11, 2015, to Durham author Mur Lafferty for Ghost Train to New Orleans.

Lafferty won last year’s inaugural award for novel The Shambling Guide to New York City. Accepting the award on Lafferty’s behalf, Dennis Ti read her prepared remarks, which included her appreciation of the work of her fellow nominees, and her announcement that she has recused herself from award consideration for next year’s award.
